about

“’The Parting of the Ways’ features compositions I wrote during the first two years I spent away from my hometown. These six tunes reflect the process one goes through when growing up; from playing as children, to learning how to make difficult decisions and finally learning how to plan into the future.

The whole story of this album started in spring 2011, when I found a little, white music box in one of the wardrobes at my grandmother’s house. The music box was buried deep inside the wardrobe amongst old toys that my cousins and I used to play with as children. It was half damaged but still working. The tune consisted of a short motive that I had never heard before, it was not one of those typical music-box “cheery melodies”. It was a sad tune and I sensed that the little box was full of memories unknown to me yet at the same time it was eerie. From the very first note I could see that there was more to this box than a white plastic cover and the metal mechanism turning inside. I immediately recorded the melody to save it in case it stopped working. At the time I was unaware that I had actually started something much bigger. During the next months I would be collecting and recording many different types of toys and toy-instruments including music boxes, cheep/ low quality guitars, harps, bells, percussive instruments and so on.

The idea behind all this was to use these new sounds and colours generated by these toy-instruments and add them to my arrangements and compositions. During the process of recording and playing the instruments I felt like a child again, enjoying the simplicity of it all.
I was also surprised at how fresh and bright the sound of the first demo recording was. After having made the demo recordings without any preparations or even learning how to play these new instruments, I realized that these recordings had a more personal/organic sound than anything I had recorded previously. I thought about this and came to the realization that for me a toy was a symbol of childhood. Children do not think before they act. They just go for it and grab it, whether it be an object or a moment in time or someone’s hand! I was also a child once, and after all it has not been that long since then, so I set out to play and compose in this pure childlike manner.

My life began playing with toys. These pieces of music began with toys. Through the process of writing and recording the music for this album I realized that I have never stopped playing.
